Selecting Dance Studios

Choosing a dance studio is an important step in the process of learning to dance. There are several important factors regarding the studio which must be evaluated in addition to several important questions which should be answered.

First, you should ask yourself what is most important to you in dancing? If you are only interested in learning to dance for the fun of it, less expensive dance studios are a good option. If; however, you want to learn to dance with an eye possibly toward competing at a future time it is important to focus on finding the best dance studio available to you.

You should also give some serious consideration to the amount of money you are willing to dedicate to learning to dance. Ideally, it is best to develop a monthly budget you can afford to spend. This should be done before you begin to look for a dance studio. Knowing what you can afford up front can help you to avoid many hassles later on down the road.

It is also important to consider how important the social benefits of dancing may be to you. For many people belonging to a particular dance studio is much like belonging to a gym or any other club. If that is the case, you may wish to get one or more studios a trial before making a decision regarding whether you feel comfortable there or not.

After you have narrowed down your options to a few choices, it is important to find out the philosophy of the studios you are considering. Do they focus on the enjoyment aspect or are they more tuned into providing instruction in the technically correct way to dance? Does the studio focus on competition dancing? Be sure to find out the answers to these questions; they can make a huge difference in how much enjoyment you get from your lessons. It is imperative to match the philosophy of the dance studio with your own goal for wanting to learn to dance.

Do not forget to ask what kinds of services the studio offers. This means finding out whether the studio offers lessons for groups, privates, specialized courses, practice sessions and even floor time for individual practice. The studio may also offer other services such as social dances, competitive dresses, shoes, etc.

It is also a good idea to ask whether the studio offers and plans any special activities such as regular competitions.

In addition, find out what level of training the teachers have. This is a very important question, regardless of whether you wish to eventually compete or not. The individuals who are teaching you should have the qualifications to help you reach your goals. It is also a good idea to find out what kind of teaching method is used in the studio.

When evaluating studios, try to get a feel for the atmosphere. Do you feel relaxed, as though you can have fun dancing there? Do you feel comfortable and welcome? Does everyone seem to be treated fairly? The answers to these questions can be quite important. Avoid studios where individuals are not treated with common courtesy.

You might also consider asking other people who attend the studios you consider how they feel about the services and instruction they have received. Do they feel as though their goals are being met? Do they feel pressured-either to achieve more or spend more? Obviously one complaint may not rule out a studio but several complaints can certainly indicate there may be a problem.

Finally, do not forget to inquire about fees for services. Always make sure you completely understand what lessons are included in the prices quoted.
