Ballroom Dance Basics

In the past dance classes were often required of many young men and women as they entered society. Today; however, dance classes and other similar niceties have pretty much been ignored as a part of modern social training. Unfortunately, as a result many young people find they are entering a world in which they are unprepared to take part in an enjoyable and important aspect of life; ballroom dancing.

Even if you were not fortunate enough to take ballroom dance classes when you were younger rest assured that does not mean you cannot learn this wonderful art form now; regardless of how old you might happen to be. Remember it’s never too late to learn how to dance. There are a few things you should know about ballroom dancing; however, before you sign up to improve your experience.

The first thing you should know is that there are actually two different kinds of ballroom dancing. These two styles are known as American ballroom dancing and international ballroom dancing. Primarily, American ballroom dancing takes place in America. By and large, this style of dancing is not as standardized as the more formal, and traditional, International ballroom dancing.

There are many differences between International and American ballroom dancing. One of the biggest differences between these two styles of dancing is the level of competition in International ballroom dancing. Although there are some exceptions, American ballroom dancing is usually restricted to social settings and not the competition scene.

You should also know there are distinct and different categories within each style of ballroom dancing. For example, in the International style of ballroom dancing there are Latin and Standard categories. In the American style of ballroom dancing you will find Smooth and Rhythm categories.

When it comes to the specific types of dances in each style and category, you are probably already at least somewhat familiar with a few of them. The tango, waltz, Viennese waltz and foxtrot are found within the Smooth American style of dancing. They are also contained within the International style of ballroom dancing. In the latter form; however, the Quickstep is included while it is not found in the Smooth American style of ballroom dancing.

The American Rhythm style of ballroom dancing contains the Rumba, ChaCha, East Coast Swing, Mambo and Bolero. The ChaCha and Rumba can also be found in the Latin International style of ballroom dancing as well as the Jive, Paso Doble and Samba.

If you have the desire to learn this wonderful art form there is really no reason not to do so, especially with many dance studios easily located around the world. Even if you have never danced before and find you are somewhat nervous about beginning, most instructors are quite adept at helping you feel at ease and learning the steps in no time. In addition, you should know dance classes are usually offered at very convenient times. In many large cities it is even quite possible to squeeze in a class during your lunch hour.

In addition to signing up for classes where you can participate with other dances you can also take private one-on-one lessons. Many first time dance students find this is a great way to get a feel for the art of dancing before actually demonstrating their steps in front of others.

Just remember you should never allow nerves or fear to prevent you from the experience of learning to dance. Regardless of whether you want to learn for a special occasion or you simply want to learn for your own pleasure, there is nothing quite like ballroom dancing.
